Christopher’s story
A tenant of Cartrefi Conwy, visited our Creating Enterprise Llandudno Hub in March 2023. At that time, he had been unemployed for over 10 years and was claiming sickness benefits. During his Information Session with Tish our Volunteer Coordinator, Christopher communicated that he wasn’t actively seeking employment. However, he recognised the need to engage in meaningful activities for his mental health, beyond spending time playing his Xbox.
To address this, Christopher began attending weekly sessions at the hub, focusing on completing mandatory e-learning. Additionally, he was referred to Creating Enterprise’s Passport to Construction programme to obtain a Level 1 qualification in Construction Safety and a CSCS card.
Christopher faced challenges in social interactions, often appearing negative, disinterested, and occasionally rude. The front-end support, a valuable resource for individuals like Christopher who have isolated themselves from society, proved beneficial, offering the opportunity to reintegrate into society, learn, and experience being part of a team again.
Christopher expressed that this was the first time someone had believed in him and provided the support he desired and needed. This newfound belief in himself, absent for many years, fuelled his consistent attendance. Over time, the tough exterior he initially presented as a defense mechanism dissolved, revealing Christopher’s true personality.
In just six months, Christopher transformed from having no intention of seeking employment to applying for a full-time paid role within Creating Enterprise’s Employment Academy. His positive attitude, developed during this period, allowed him to confidently approach the interview process. Christopher received support in interview skills, participated in a mock interview, and received constructive feedback. His efforts paid off, and Christopher was offered the role.
Congratulations, Christopher, from the entire Creating Futures Team!
